A Remarkable Trail System at Your Door Step
South Elgin sits in beautiful and perfect location for outdoor enthusiasts; we're at the nexus of hundreds of miles of inter-connected trails heading north, south, east and west. The Fox River Trail runs 44 miles along the Fox River and directly through South Elgin's Village Center. The Illinois Prairie Path intersects with the Fox River Trail near Raymond Street in South Elgin, and leads into Chicago's suburbs and then southward to Aurora (where it reconnects to the Fox River Trail that'll bring you straight back to South Elgin). Or follow the Fox River Trail south of the Village to Jon J Duerr Forest Preserve, and hop on the River Bend Trail running east/west and along Silver Glen Road. This path leads to the Mid-County Trail along Randall Road and eventually connects at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve (St. Charles) to the Great Western Trail heading west to Sycamore.

Fox River Trail Renovation
This sweeping access to multiple trail routes had been hampered for years due to a washed-out bridge along the Fox River trail (near the Elgin/South Elgin border), and a short, privately held stretch of the Fox River Trail that had fallen into disrepair. Following several years of negotiations, the Village of South Elgin completed the purchase of the Wolf Property in July 2021. The 600 foot stretch on the east side of the Fox River near the State Street bridge leads behind Marison Mill Suites and Water’s Edge apartments and re-connects the entire 44 mile trail for the first time in more than a decade. Best of all, this small stretch is now publicly held land for all to enjoy. Upon acquiring the property, the Village immediately began clearing brush and temporarily patching damaged asphalt. During September 2021, crews from the Village's Public Works and Parks & Recreation Department fully replaced the old path with new asphalt. At nearly the same time, the Kane County Forest Preserve completed a years-long project to replace the damaged bridge and construct tunnel access below the Union Pacific railroad tracks near Raymond Street in South Elgin. The Fox River Trail is fully accessible to/from the north once again! Watch for additional improvements to our renovated stretch of the path in the coming years! Below you'll find a photo timeline of the project:
