Townships are required by law to perform three functions:  general assistance, property assessment and road and bridge maitenance.  Many provide a variety of services beyond the three mandated functions  including programs for senior citizens, disabled citizens, youth, relief, health, emergency, cemeteries, and environmental services.  South Elgin is served by two townships, St. Charles and Elgin.  If you are unsure which township you are served by, please check your tax bill.

Services available include:  Emergency Assistance, Voter Registration, Absentee Voting, Information and Referral for Social Services, Notary Public Services,  Disaster Relief Program (Referral from Elgin/So. Elgin Police or Fire Departments, Pingree Grove and Countryside Fire Departments) and Senior Services.
