Garbage Collection Days, Collection Hours and Holiday Schedule
Except as modified during holidays, garbage, recycling and yard waste is collected Wednesday and Thursday. All items must be set out no later than 6 am on collection day.   Do not place items at the curb before 5 pm on the day prior to pickup. Containers must be removed from the curb no later than 6 pm on the day after collection.   Drives begin collecting at 6:00 am and end by 7:00 pm  If the driver misses your collection, contact Groot directly and it will picked up the next day.  Groot offices are open 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, except on the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  When one of these holidays fall on a week day, your scheduled service will be delayed by one day (ie. should New Year's Day fall on a Monday and your normally scheduled pick up is Wednesday it will be picked up on Thursday and a normally scheduled Thursday pick up will take place on Friday.)  If a holiday falls on a Saturday, garbage pickup is not affected; however, if a holiday falls on a Sunday, garbage pickup is delayed by one day.  The following holidays do not affect garbage collection:  Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day or Columbus Day.

Garbage Service
Groot provides  95-gallon green carts to residents.  Place the cart as close as possible to the curb with the wheels facing toward the house.  Excess garbage may be placed in plastic garbage bags.  There is no limit to the number of receptacles or bags residents may place at the curb provided they weigh no more than 50 pounds and no more than 3 yards in volume, with the exception of construction/remodeling debris and hazardous materials not to exceed the contents of one 30-gallon container or 10, 4' x 4' rolls of carpet.

One large item per week will be picked up at no additional cost ie:  furniture,  mattresses, box springs etc.  Small amounts, less than two cubic yards in volume, of earth sod, rocks or debris if placed in disposable or acceptable containers, or in securely tied bundles not exceeding four feet in length or 50 pounds in weight will also be picked up.  State Law prohibits the landfilling of large residential appliances or “white goods”; therefore, residents must contact Groot directly to schedule the collection of larger residential appliances.  “White goods” are collected at no additional cost.

On request, the contractor will provide residents with additional disposal service beyond that described for all types of  materials  (except for poisonous and toxic materials and large quantities of liquid requiring tank truck disposal equipment).  Contact Groot directly to schedule a special pick up.

Recycling Services
Recycling material is collected on the same day as garbage and yard waste.  Residents are provided with a 65-gallon blue recycling cart.   Kane County Recycles provides valuable information on area recycling including electronics, paint etc. 

Yard Waste Services
Weekly landscaping/yard waste collection is provided from March 1st through December 15th on the same day as garbage and recycling pick-up.  This waste may be placed in standard brown kraft yard waste bags or in containers clearly marked "yard waste."  Containers or bags may not exceed 34-gallon capacity or weigh more than 50-lbs.

Yard waste includes all accumulations of grass, leaves, shrubs, vines and other similar items.  Small bushes, brush and branch clippings, when securely bound with string or twine in bundles not exceeding four feet in length, will be collected.   Live Christmas trees are collected on regularly scheduled pickup days during the first three full weeks of January each year. Trees must be free of metal, plastics, all decorations and disposal bags.

Senior/Large Lot Leaf Pick Up Program
Curbside, unbagged leaf pickup is provided to households owned and/or occupied by senior citizens (age 65 or older) who are currently enrolled in the Senior Credit Program and to owners/occupants of residential lots larger than one acre. Leaves are collected by the contractor on Mondays from September 1st through December 15th or the first snow fall.  Residents should be aware that the program only applies to leaves generated on a qualifying lot . If the Village determines that non-site generated leaves have been placed on an eligible lot, the residence will be removed from the program until such time as the leaves have been removed or bagged in an appropriate manner. Leaf pick-up must be scheduled in advance by contacting the Administrative Services Department at 847-742-5780 by 10 am the Friday before the pick up week.

Hazardous Material Collection
Residents may call the Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at 1-866-466-5060 to schedule a free pickup.  This service is sponsored by Kane County and the Village. Each household is restricted to one use per year. 

  • Acceptable material: aerosol products; antifreeze; motor oil; gasoline; batteries blacktop sealer; cleaning products and solvents; hobby and photography chemicals; lawn chemicals and pesticides; oil-based paints, stains and finishes; and pool chemicals.
  • Unacceptable material: Ammunition/gun powder; biological/medical wastes; explosives or fireworks; farm machinery oil; fire extinguishers, oxygen tanks, helium tanks, and smoke/CO detectors.
