After months of temporary lane closures and prep work, the Illinois Department of Transportation plans to begin the actual culvert replacement on Illinois Route 31 near Fox River Trolley Museum. The State indicates this is a multi-month project beginning the week of April 22, 2024 (UPDATE as of 4/21/24: IL31 will be closed effective 4/22/24) and will involve a detour (see map image below). The stretch of Rt 31 between Stearns and the entrance to the Trolley Museum will be accessible for local traffic only. The area of the culvert replacement (from the museum to Plum) will be shutdown entirely and not accessible for vehicles. Please use the McLean detour or consider using Route 25, Randall or Gilbert to bypass the construction area while traveling north/south.

We understand there's a potential overlap brewing on McLean considering it's a detour route as well as a road IDOT has slated to rebuild beginning this summer. At this point, our contacts are optimistic the Rt 31 Culvert Project detour will wrap-up before actual road work takes place on McLean. And while the IL31 detour is in effect, the preliminary work taking place on McLean will continue to allow traffic flow.

We will post updates here and at www.facebook.com/southelginillinois as we receive them from IDOT. To contact the IL Dept of Transportation project manager, please email: christopher.kustes@illinois.gov

Thank you for your patience.
